By day, a small bonsai that sits quietly on a shelf. After dark, a tree full of fireflies. 108 tiny LEDs  run along the length of every branch, so the light comes from inside the canopy rather than shining at you  the same effect as sunlight caught in leaves. One touch of the base turns it on. No lamp shade, no harsh bulb, no cable across the desk if you don't want one.

Light that softens a room instead of lighting it up

Instead of one bright bulb, the glow is split across 108 points spread through the branches. Each one is small enough to look at directly, so what reaches the room is soft and warm rather than glaring. It works on a bedside table as a night light, on a bookshelf, a window ledge, a desk, or in the middle of a dinner table anywhere a lamp would feel too strong.

Branches that make the light move

Every branch is copper wire wrapped in a bark-textured finish, with LEDs threaded along its whole length rather than clustered at the tip. Because the branches sit at different heights and angles, the light reaches you unevenly  denser in the middle of the canopy, scattered at the outer twigs, with the whole tree seeming to shimmer as you move past it. That's the detail that separates a tree lamp from a string of lights in a jar.

USB or battery  put it wherever you want

Run it from the USB cable if there's a socket nearby, or drop in 3 AA batteries  and place it anywhere at all: a shelf with no outlet, a mantel, a wedding table, a windowsill. The switch is a touch sensor in the base  one tap on, one tap off, and further taps cycle through the lighting modes . (Unplug the USB cable when running on batteries.)

Shape it once, or change it every season

Every branch bends and holds, so the tree you unbox is only a starting point. Fan the canopy wide, draw it tall and narrow, sweep it to one side like a wind-bent pine  it keeps whatever shape you give it, and you can change your mind next month. Bend gently and only from the thin branches; the main trunk is fixed by design. There's nothing to water and nothing to replace: dust it now and then with a dry cloth and that's the whole of the maintenance.
